Expressions of Hope and Wish

   Pengertian wish


Kata WISH umumnya digunakan dalam kalimat Simple Past Tense, meskipun kata ini juga masih dapat digunakan dalam bentuk Simple Present Tense.
Kata kunci penggunaan WISH:
Wish biasa digunakan untuk menyatakan sebuah harapan atau sebuah keinginan. Namun, harapan tersebut cenderung sangat sulit untuk dapat terwujud atau bahkan merujuk sesuatu yang bisa dibilang mustahil.
Selain itu kata wish juga dapat digunakan untuk menguangkap sebuah penyesalan. Berandai-andai sesuatu tersebut terjadi, namun pada kenyataannya tidak terjadi.
Okedeh agar lebih jelas lagi coba sama-sama kita lihat beberapa contoh kalimat menggunakan kata wish berikut ini!

Contoh Kalimat:

  • Budi: I wish today is Sunday.
  • Budi: Aku berharap hari ini adalah hari Minggu.
Maknanya: Mungkin Budi adalah seorang pegawai kantoran. Hari Senin ia harus masuk kerja, namun ia masih ingin libur. Oleh karena itu ia mengatakan kalimat diatas. Padahal hal tersebut adalah sesuatu yang bisa dibilang mustahil. Emang ada yang bisa mundurin hari, dari Senin balik ke Minggu lagi? hehee
  • Setnop: I wish I didn’t take the money.
  • Setnop: Aku berharap (dulu) tidak mengambil uang tersebut.
Maknanya: Dalam kalimat ini adalah penggunaan wish dalam bentuk penyesalan. Pak Setnop mungkin menyesal telah mengambil uang namun saat ini ia tidak mungkin dapat mengulang waktu agar tidak jadi mengambil uang tersebut. Tentu hal itu adalah sesuatu yang mustahil. Jadi kalimatnya menggunakan ‘WISH’.

Contoh kalimat lainnya:

  • Guntur: I wish I hadn’t made that mistake.
  • Donny: I wish I had started sooner.
  • Siska: I wish that you were a bit taller bro.
  • Messi: I wish I can fly.
Artinya:
  • Guntur: Aku harap aku tidak melakukan kesalahan itu.
  • Donny: Aku harap aku mulai lebih cepat.
  • Siska: Aku harap Anda sedikit lebih tinggi.
  • Messi: Aku harap aku bisa terbang.


Pengertian Hope

Kata HOPE umumnya digunakan dalam kalimat Future Tense, meskipun kata ini juga masih dapat digunakan dalam bentuk Present Tense.
Kata kunci penggunaan HOPE:
Hope adalah kata dalam bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk menyatakan sebuah harapan. Harapan tersebut merupakan sebuah harapan yang cenderung dapat terwujud bahkan dapat dibilang sangat mungkin terjadi.
Selain itu kata hope juga dapat digunakan untuk menyatakan sebuah cita-cita. Nah, agar sahabat BDBI lebih jelas lagi coba sama-sama kita lihat beberapa contoh kalimat menggunakan kata hope berikut ini!

Contoh Kalimat:

  • Chef Juna: I hope you enjoyed the main course.
  • Chef Juna: Saya harap Anda menikmati hidangan utamanya.
Maknanya: Chef Juna adalah seorang Chef professional dan handal. Ia mengatakan hal tersebut menggunakan ‘hope’ karena hal tersebut sangat mungkin terjadi dan bakal terwujud. [harapan yang sangat mungkin terwujud]

Contoh Kalimat:

  • Anies: I hope I get a scholarship to University of Indonesia.
  • Anies: Aku harap aku mendapatkan sebuah beasiswa ke UI (Universitas Indonesia).
Maknanya: Dalam kalimat ini kita dapat menilai dari 2 konteks kalimat. Pertama, penggunaan HOPE karena mungkin saja Anies adalah seorang siswa yang pandai, lalu adalah sesuatu yang sangat mungkin terjadi ia mendapatkan beasiswa tersebut. Kedua, penggunaan HOPE ingin menunjukkan bahwa Anies mempunyai cita-cita untuk mendapatkan beasiswa di UI.

Contoh kalimat lainnya:

  • They hope to visit Makah next year.
  • I hope I can go to Singapore this month.
Artinya:
  • Mereka berharap mengunjungi Mekah tahun depan.
  • Aku harap aku bisa pergi ke Singapura bulan ini.

Why does Edo give Lia a present?
